     One high school and one elementary athletes of Arellano University shone in the Diwa Pasiklaban sa Paaralan League of Champions- Chess Challenge held January 28, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City during Asia’s Largest Educational Kids Fair, a first in Asia.

     The high school department was represented in the National Finals of the competition by Carl Jaedrianne Ancheta and James Michael Erese, both Grade 9 students , section Milton, of the Main Campus. The former, also known as CJ Ancheta, challenged and defeated Grand Master Janelle May Frayna. Similarly, the elementary department was represented by Jean Carlos Miguel Reyes Caranoo and Gabrielle Joel Santos, both Grade 6 students from the Main Campus. The latter lost to Grand Master Eugene Torre while the former defeated Grand Master Janelle May Frayne and was awarded as one of the “ last 5 men standing “ winners out of 39 participants from different schools.

     The two grandmasters played simultaneously against all the contestants in each grade level in the “One Vs. All” Exhibition game. The students chose their grandmaster opponent through a “draw lots” scheme. GM Eugene Torre had one draw over 20 players while GM Janelle Mae Frayna had one draw and 2 losses over 19 players.

     The high school department chess players were coached by Mr. Mark Malonzo, while those of the elementary department, by Mr. Renato Tabuga.
