The Arellano University-Pasig campus hosted its first PBA campus tour game featuring the NLEX Road Warriors and the Talk N’ Text Tropang TNT. The whole campus was filled with excitement as the PBA stars from both teams arrived early to meet the students that will watch their game, NLEX wasted no time in putting the pressure on their sister team as Kevin Alas and Raul Soyud raged to give the Road Wariors an early lead in the first quarter. Mo Tautuaa started the game strong to keep the Tropang TNT within striking distance. The Road Warriors were also led by former Gilas Cadet Garvo Lanete, and Glenn Khobuntin, the team missed the services of veteran big man Asi Taulava and all around-forward Shawn Anthony, who are currently recovering from their knee injuries. They also had former Arellano’s sweet shooting guard, James Forrester, recently acquired Mac Baracael, and Emman Monfort as the key additions for the team’s campaign in the upcoming Governor’s cup. The Road Warriors led most of the game, but the Tropang TNT’s young guns in Openg Sumalinog, Jai Reyes and Mikol Sorela kept their team within striking distance. The Tropang TNT was led as well by the Fil-Tongan big man Moala Tautuaa and former Gilas player, Dylan Ababou.
Talk N’ Text played without their key players Ranidel De Ocampo and Asia’s Best Point Guard, Jayson Castro, as the two are currently part of the country’s quest to qualify for the Rio Olympics this August for Gilas Pilipinas, the team also missed the services of their import Jason Maxiell due to disqualification as the NBA veteran did not pass the height limit for the season ending Governor’s Cup. The Road Warriors kept the pressure on TNT as they locked down on defense limiting the TNT’s offense with every shot being contested and the shaded lane being protected by Soyud and veteran big man Enrico Villanueva. TNT was knocking on the door in the fourth quarter as they went on a run to try and steal the win, but he Road Warriors’’ defense was just too much, as the team in purple and white claimed the 83-77 victory and establish another upset for their sister team. After the game Coach Boyet Fernandez said that, he told his players to enjoy the game and play for the fans, “this is the purpose of our campus tour”, said the longtime PBA coach. Asked on how he felt about the Arellano-Pasig’s warm welcome, “first thing that came to my mind was may Arellano bas a pasig?, but anyways when I found out I was very happy, and the reception was great, hopefully maulit to.” “Sana makabalik ulit kami ditto, the fans are great, they love my players, hopefully soon”. The former PBA player turned coach also said that he sees potential in James Forrester to give major contributions for the team in the near future. “That’s why we got him”, “the reason is the athleticism and the shooting, what I saw when he played for Arellano and Cagayan that’s what I believe that he can deliver for the team.”
The crowd darling, Emman Monfort also expressed his overwhelming experience inside the Arellano Gym, as the crowd roared everytime he touched the basketball. “literally and figuratively sobrang init ng pag tanggap sakin dito, sobrang andyan yung school spirit..” asked about playing along side Kevin and Garvo, and coming back to NLEX, “sobrang saya, it’s like coming home, with coach boyet, kabisado na naming yung isa’t isa, Masaya yung experience” asked about how he feels about the support he got during the game from the Arellano fans, the former Ateneo Blue Eagles captain said, “ thankful ako sa Arellano students and officials, the fans, hopefully may meron din maging PBA player na manggagaling ditto sa campus niyo..” we also catched up with Arellano University alumnus, James Forrester to share his thoughts on the PBA campus tour at his alma mater’s helm. “it feels like old times”, “it was fun, grabe yung experience, grabe yung fans sa suporta, I love the Arellano fans, my heart and soul is with them.” Added the Toronto, Ontario native. Asked about his message to the Arellano community, James excitingly answered “Thank you so much for the support! Keep supporting the Arellano Chiefs and the NLEX road Warriors, for the Chiefs, go get it this year, I believe in Dodong(Jiovanni Jalalon)” –(John Mark Herrera)
